Adult tricycles (trikes) for baby boomers and beyond @ PHEW!

Dear PHEW!
What can you tell me about three-wheeled bicycles? I’m 60+ years old and would like to take up recreational bike riding but don’t trust myself on a bicycle.
Shakily,
a Bicycle Challenged Person

Dear Bicycle Challenged Person,
Three-wheeled bicycles — also known as trikes or adult tricycles — are a great cycling option for people who have concerns with their balance, also  seniors and  older boomers .  In the US, trikes are typically used for recreation, shopping, and exercise.

Let me share with you what we have experience helping people get their tricycles at our store, but first let me share with you the story of one of the oldest bikes in the world, Raleigh Bicycles.

“Frank Bowden was born in Devon and made a fortune in the stock market by the age of 24. When he returned from Hong Kong he was seriously ill and his doctor gave him six months to live. Bowden took up cycling on his doctor’s advice and bought a bicycle from a small shop on Raleigh Street, Nottingham, run by Messrs Woodhead, Angois and Ellis. He was so impressed with his recovering health and the bicycle that he bought the company ….” Read more on Wikipedia

More balance and safer cycling.
Most people who come to our shop for a trike are people who would like to ride a bike, but worry about falling. An adult tricycle is a smart option to consider because of the stability it provides. With a tricycle, you can ride as slow as you want without ever losing your balance.  Both feet can remain on the pedals while seated, which is very reassuring for many older riders.  In addition, adult tricycles are often made with a low “step through” design making getting on and off the tricycle easier than with a bicycle.  Trikes come with different size tires to better fit the rider.  Typically, the handlebar is raised and wide making them easier to reach and grip. Our tricycles offer oversize seats, typically with backrests, for comfort and support.

Types of tricycles
In our store we have three makes of tricycles: Torker, Schwinn, and Sun. There are literally dozens of different types of adult tricycles to choose from with prices ranging anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.  There are four major categories…

  • Simple Common Upright: These trikes are primarily used for leisurely rides around the neighborhood for pleasure, fitness or running errands. Traditional upright-positioned tricycles come with rear cargo baskets and limited gear options usually ranging from one to three-speeds.  Single speed tricycles start from $270 to $399. Three speed tricycles are from $399 to $679. You can take a look at what we have in our store.
  • Recumbent Trikes:  Recumbent bicycles/trikes have lower-to-the-ground, stretched-out frames that allow you to recline with your legs positioned in front of you.  Recumbent trikes are priced are much higher than upright trikes, typically starting at $800. We’ve had the opportunity to convert a number of them to electric-assisted trikes. Recumbent trikes are available in various styles, they are very comfortable, easy on the back and aerodynamic which make them ideal for long rides.  Check out terratrike.com, sunbicycles.com, catrike.com, trailmate.com and greenspeed.com for a nice variety.
  • Folding Tricycles: Some people like to take their trikes with them when they travel, or have limited storage space. Tricycles that are designed to fold up to fit in tight spaces are another popular option.
  • Electric Assisted Tricycles: This is our specialty at Philly Electric Wheels. Having power assist as a backup is a great feeling.  If you get tired you can use the electric assist to get you back where you started, or if you get to a hill that you can not pedal.  There are people who need a boost from time to time.  Think of an electric-assist trike as a hybrids that has pedals and an electric motor, so you can exercise when you want or you can sit back and let the trike do the work.  We have tricycles that are designed with electric-assist; we can also convert any tricycle to an electric trike – with an E-BikeKit. The E-BikeKit for tricycles let’s you go in reverse. Prices start at $995.

And as always the best way to know what a tricycle feels like is to test ride one. Stop on by…

Love ,
